Sunderland forward Ross Stewart is locked in a contract impasse with his club’s manager Tony Mowbray slapped a PS30m price on his top player in January.
The Scotland striker hasn’t played since the end of August due to injury , and won’t be back up to the World Cup, but his standings are still high after scoring 5 goals over the course of seven matches in the first week of the season during the English Championship and the club want to see the striker signed to new terms. Former Ross County target man is not in contract until the summer but The Black Cats have the option of extending the contract for another year.
Stewart was subject to an interest from Rangers as well as other English Premier League clubs in the summer. However, Mowbray has now admitted that Sunderland aren’t more likely to extend his time in Sunderland in the midst of months-long negotiations. But, manager Mowbray has declared that it would require a substantial deal to force the club to let go of Stewart during the winter window.
Mowbray stated to The Newcastle Chronicle: “I don’t know Ross the agent. I’ve never had a conversation with Ross, but I’m pretty sure that he believes he’s got (PSG striker Kylian) Mbappe on his side and if we’re able to reach a figure that will make Ross feel at ease in his stomach knowing that we truly believe in him and want him to stay , and therefore he believes this is the best platform for him to excel If we achieve that and Ross signs a new contract then that’s fantastic.
“If we aren’t able to reach that point because it causes damage to all structures, it’s likely cause destruction behind the scenes , because there are other players who are thinking “hang on a minute what’s the reason he’s making this much while I’m earning this?’ The club must make these decisions, and sometimes it’s really difficult however, if you are forced the need to dispose of an asset, you must sell an asset.
“That’s the reason I believe you must be honest as the fans are entitled to the truth. They would like the best players, but there are times when you cannot have the top players if you don’t have the money.
“Otherwise three years later you’re in financial trouble, and you’re in administration, and you’ll get 20 points because you’ve violated the rules of finance by trying to stretch yourself to the limit. I’m hoping we can solve this issue (with Stewart). I think he’s got an incredible opportunity to grow his career.
“A team that is able to create opportunities and has a variety of technical players who can place the ball into the the right spots. If you score 20 or 25 goals and the phone rings from the roof.
“All that he needs need to do is go at the office of the manager, or head coach and say , ‘I am aware that someone else has been looking for me and I’d like go’. Then , we say “right, so you’re not a PS30m player, we’re good to go’.”
