It is reported that the Conservative Member of Parliament of Ashfield within Nottinghamshire has stated that the Government must “grow a backbone” and “send illegal immigrants straight back the same day”. Lee Anderson was speaking in an argument within the House of Commons this afternoon (November 7) regarding the number of people who cross the Channel in tiny vessels.
In the first quarter of 2018 more than 40,000 people have crossed the border this year, the most since the first figures were taken in the year the year. Today, during the urgent question in the Commons some Tories expressed concerns over the suitability of hotels within their respective constituencies to host immigrants.
Mr. Anderson declared: “When I hear words like’sourcing housing’ and getting hotel rooms for illegal immigrants” that makes a bitter taste my mouth. Let me tell you that I’ve got 5,000 residents in Ashfield looking to secure council housing, but they can’t obtain one.
“When do we stop blameing the French and the ECHR and the left-wing lawyers and the like? The blame is in this spot (Parliament).
“When are we going to grow a backbone and do the right thing and send them straight back the same day?” Minister of immigration Robert Jenrick responded by telling the aforementioned Mr Anderson that, while it was true that the UK ought to have to be “guided by our common desire for decency” and that there is “not right that migrants are put up in three or four-star hotels at exorbitant cost to the United Kingdom taxpayer”.
The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that there was “not one simple solution” to address the issue of people who cross the Channel on small vessels. However, he added that there was an opportunity to collaborate with European countries to tackle illegal migration.
