Anatomy of a Scandal had several serious twists and turns throughout its debut season, especially as the trial of an MP in trial for raping a parliament intern led to its final conclusion.
The Netflix the series inspired by the novel that has the same title The member of parliament, James Whitehouse, denies sexual assault, and claims that the encounter in question was consensual , and part of a five-month naughty affair which frequently involved having sexual relations in the workplace. His wife Sophie is with him in the face the accusations.
But, the aide to the political party Olivia Lytton alleges that while they had the occasional affair James was able to force himself upon her when they were together in a lift in the House of Commons.
What exactly transpired? Did the lawyers for the defence have a chance to convince the jury that Olivia claimed to have raped James in order to be angry about their separation, following having fallen in love with James? Was James in fact found to be guilty of rape? did he exploit Olivia in the process of gaining her consent, and refusing to listen to her pleas to him to stop?
What did Sophie think about all that took place as the drama unfolded during the trial, putting her seemingly perfect relationship with husband, and her two kids in doubt?
The whole story was revealed as the truth finally came out.
The Scandal’s Anatomy: The Verdict
After a lengthy and widely-publicized hearing, James Whitehouse walked free after being found to be innocent of the crime in the court. The jury only took 4 hours to deliberate before coming to a decision, and they could reach their verdict even faster.
It is apparent that, the jury’s taking into account the victim’s 5-month affair with James the couple, it was claimed by the defense that the assault at the House of Commons was a “moment of passionate feelings” and Olivia was furious for the fact that James was the one to end their romance.
The Anatomy of a Scandal : The Truth
Unfortunately, even though James was not found in the courtroom by the jury however, he was in fact guilty of sexual rape.
In reality, he’d previously done it during his period studying at Oxford University, cornering Sophie’s classmate, Holly Berry, while she was drinking in the hallway , and then beating her.
When Holly initially lets James the opportunity to touch her he resents her efforts to stop the kiss from progressing. In a bizarre incident that is not a coincidence, James calls her a “prick tease” similar to the as he did with Olivia nearly two decades later.
Holly then dropped out of Oxford then recommenced her new life and began using her maiden name of Kate. After she got married she changed her name to Woodcroft which is that identical Kate Woodcroft who had been fighting James’s sentence in the courtroom.
Sophie starts to unravel the idea that Kate is and Holly are one and the same after learning from an unknown source Holly was slain by James and James, but before she noticed her meticulous note-taking on colorful Post-it notes during the courtroom.
But instead of helping her husband, and alerting authorities to her findings she remained silent, and only heightened her doubts James was lying.
Anatomy of a Scandal: The Fallout
Now knowing the truth about what happened, Sophie packs up the kids and leaves James, despite his protests.
She later reconnects with Kate/Holly to discuss what actually happened to her on that fateful night back in Oxford.
The women bond over their shared fury at the lack of justice James has received. But Sophie then delivers the ultimate upper hand – she has a way of finally seeing him get brought down for something, even if it’s not a rape conviction.
Sophie tells Kate about James’s ultimate secret, the night of the ball, and the Prime Minister’s attachment to James after helping him cover up his heroin use and hand in the death of one of the Libertines, an exclusive society of rich university students.
So while James may not have been convicted of either rape, there is a chance he may end up in prison for something – or have his and the Prime Minister’s career and reputations tarnished as a result.
And in the final moments, James is seen being taken away by police.
