Olympic gymnast Amy Tinkler will replace Denise van Outen as an ice dancer on this year’s season of Dancing on Ice.
Denise announced that she would be quitting her participation in the ITV competition today following an “nasty fall” left her with 46 fractured bones.
In her place, 21-year old Amy Tinkler, who has been training as a back-up contestant, is scheduled to dance alongside the pro skater Joe Johnson from this weekend.
She explained: “For the past three months Joe and I have been working incredibly intensely as the team reserve to Dancing on Ice and we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be performing on dancing on the Sunday show.
“We would like to send Denise van Outen a very quick recovery. She has been so generous to us, and we would like to wish her the best.
“I can’t wait to show you all what we can do.”
Amy was raised in Durham and lives living in Bishop Auckland.
She was awarded an Olympic bronze medal at her 2016 Rio Olympics in Rio, and she was also the British overall champion.
Amy is particularly well-known for her floor workouts for which she also took home silver medal at her 2013 Junior European Championships and gold at the 2015 British Championships.
British Gymnastics claims that while she excels in floor she’s also an all-around gymnast who is known for her strength and calmness in competitions.
This nerve was evident during this year’s World Championships where she helped Team GB to win team bronze.
Her age was just the tiniest athlete on Team GB in the Rio Olympics of 2016. Rio Olympics age just 16 years old. She joins Beth Tweddle as the only British female gymnast to have won one medal for herself at the Olympic Games.
In the 2017 World Championships in Canada, Amy did well throughout the competition and came in 17th overall.
She has one Olympic medal and one world championship as well as three European medals, and 10 British titles which makes her the second most accomplished female gymnast from Britain.
She resigned from competitive sports in the middle of in the year of her 20th birthday.
Though she later admitted she had other reasons for her resignation her resignation was triggered by an ankle surgery that was the third time she had surgery.
She was ordered to withdraw from this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia and didn’t participate at this year’s European Championships in Poland.
