Spiral 2 may be in the pipeline in the event that Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a box office smash, since the new Saw film certainly sets the stage for an opportunity for a sequel.
The film finally made it to cinemas after an extended wait of a year, Spiralmarks a new beginning in the notorious horror series in which Chris Rock’s detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks investigates a grisly sequence of murders similar to The Jigsaw Killer.
It was revealed in April 2021 that the producers of Twisted Pictures were already developing a tenth Saw film. It’s not known if this could be the direct sequel Spiral or another reboot of the franchise and it’s possible to imagine the possibility of it being Spiral 2..
In a conversation with Digital Spy, Rock said he would like to go back for a second outing. “I’m definitely open to doing it again,” Rock stated. “I’m like, ‘Let’s go, let’s get a script’. I think it kind of lends itself to another one, so let’s hope it happens.”
What exactly can The Spiral from the Book of Saw’s ending provide a basis for a sequel? We’re about to get into some significant spoilers and you should be looking away in the near future if you haven’t watched the film.
Spiral 2 end explained The way Spiral’s ending creates the possibility of a sequel
As Zeke and her rookie detective William Schenk (Max Minghella) look into the deaths of police officers around the area, it is apparent that the victims’ initial suspects have a close connection to Zeke and William Schenk. They also suspect them being corrupted in some way.
Zeke was disregarded by the department more than 10 years ago when he made a complaint against his colleague that time Pete Dunleavy, for murdering an innocent civilian, Charlie Emmerson, before Zeke was able to testify to the incident committed by a co-worker.
At the same time as Zeke is investigating the murders, his father – respected former police captain Marcus Banks (Samuel L Jackson) – goes missing. When Schenk’s body shows up skinned and Captain Angie Garza (Marisol Nichols) becomes the latest victim, Zeke goes to visit Dunleavy as he’s convinced it’s got something to do with his past.
However, Zeke is taken before he can talk to Dunleavy and he wakes up handcuffed in a room with Dunleavy in a trap. Zeke is given a chance to save Dunleavy by the killer, but he’s unable to free his former partner in time.
It’s revealed that Schenk is actually still alive and he’s been the one responsible for the murders, having faked his death by killing a junkie who he had used to lure his first victim, Detective Marv Boswick.
Schenk is actually the son of Emmerson, who Dunleavy killed while he was Zeke’s partner. However, since Schenk saw that Zeke reported his partner, he was convinced that he could be trusted and was one of the few honest cops left in the city.
Schenk wants Zeke to work with him to rid the city of corrupt cops, using John Kramer’s method of fixing an individual and applying it to a “whole system”.
To prove his instincts right, Schenk kidnapped Zeke’s father and has him set up in a trap, since it was Marcus Banks who was captain when Schenk’s father was killed. With one bullet left, Zeke can either kill Schenk or free his father before he’s completely drained of blood.
Zeke chooses to save his father, but Spiral is a Saw movie, so things aren’t as straightforward as that. Schenk has rigged the trap to re-activate when the SWAT team (which Schenk called) arrives and make it look like Marcus Banks is aiming a gun at them.
Spiral 2 release date: When can we expect Spiral 2?
We don’t have a confirmed release date for Spiral 2 since it’s not clear if the new Saw movie being developed is a follow-up. If it is though, we could well see a sequel sooner than we’d expect.
During Saw’s heyday, a new movie came out every year between 2004 and 2010 around Halloween time. Spiral bucked the Halloween trend by coming out in May, so a sequel could arrive in May 2022 or they might go back to Halloween and release in October 2022.
Spiral filmed between July-August 2019 ahead of its initial October 2020 release, which was then originally pushed up to May 2020. So there’s nothing to say they couldn’t film later this year and be ready for a 2022 debut.
Spiral 2 cast: Who’s coming back for Spiral 2?
If Spiral 2 does happen and is a direct sequel to the events of the first movie, then we could well see Chris Rock back as Detective Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ Banks as he tracks down his former partner – or helps him out.
Max Minghella is almost sure to return as William Schenk and take on the Tobin Bell-esque role as the continuing serial killer of the series. Saw movies were rarely direct follow-ups, so we could expect an entirely new cast as well.
It could well be that a sequel delves into Schenk’s backstory more and why he decided to be inspired by John Kramer. Director Darren Lynn Bousman was keen that Spiral did its own thing, but that could change with a sequel.
“Early on, there were discussions: do we bring John Kramer in for a cameo? Do we bring Billy the puppet in? I wanted, immediately, to say no to that, because if this was going to be a new standalone movie, you cannot keep connecting it to the previous movies,” he told Media.
With Schenk now established as the killer, you could see how John Kramer might play a bigger role in the sequel through flashbacks, much like he did in the Saw sequels.
