Liverpool vs Starsbourg : Liverpool ended their preseason in 2022/23 with a 3-0 loss at home against Strasbourg with a young Reds team struggled against their French opponents.
Following the win of the Community Shield 24 hours earlier, Jurgen Klopp was forced to change all of his starting team in Anfield in a team that was populated by teenagers.
Their lack of experience was immediately exploited by a ferocious Strasbourg attack that saw defensive errors that were punished with goals from Adrien Thomasson, and Habib Diallo in the first half after which the former scored the third goal of his side.
Klopp’s men fought hard after their restart but could not come up with an answer prior to beginning the Premier League campaign at Fulham on the 6th of August.
Klopp’s youngsters don’t impress at Anfield audition
With the massive changes imposed by Liverpool’s preseason programme, an initial squad lacking top-flight swagger was bound to struggle against an experienced squad.
But, despite having to fight Strasbourg’s strength Liverpool’s youngsters who are highly rated had a difficult time keeping their focus and utilizing their skills to develop possession.
Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho displayed some glimpses of potential however, other fringe players are likely to be disappointed by the miss on this night.
Gomez and Konate battle again in the role of Van Dijk and Matip stand-ins
Klopp has changed his centre-back team in the preseason. His the first choice pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip both settling back into their roles.
Van Dijk and Matip were both rested after they played 90 minutes of the Community Shield with Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez drafted back in.
Both players were penalized by Benjamin Sesko’s winning goal at RB Salzburg, and despite having more experience than majority of the players at Anfield the two players struggled to get their feet wet again.
The goals scored by Strasbourg were a result of mistakes by the fullback however neither Gomez or Konate showed charisma from the center when they’re Premier League opportunities took a blow.

It was a tough night for Klopp’s new Liverpool team on the pitch at Anfield in the Reds finish their the preseason with a 3-0 loss against Strasbourg.
Three goals in the first half gave the game a hefty advantage over Liverpool, but despite their efforts, Liverpool were unable to score in the closing minutes.
