WBA featherweight champ Leigh Wood was set for another unforgettable night in his hometown following his thrilling boxing match of the year with Michael Conlan in March.
The 34-year-old Englishman has signed a contract to take on hard-hitting Mexican Mauricio Lara in the Nottingham Arena on September 24.
Wood took a risk to becoming the world champion. Lara also pulled off an unforgettable surprise win at the ring on U.K. soil to put himself in the picture of the world champion.
It was a thrilling battle and then an injury-related bombshell to crash everything down in less than two weeks after the first bell.
What is the reason Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara not working?
On the 13th of September, on a Tuesday Wood’s promoter Matchroom Boxing confirmed the fighter was suffering a bicep strain during sparring.
In a subsequent interview, Eddie Hearn said the prognosis for Wood’s injury was for a six-week time-off, though he might not need surgery.
A rescheduled fight with Lara could happen either in the latter half of 2022 or 2023 and Hearn declaring that the plan is to re-fight with Josh Warrington’s once-victory.
Leeds’ IBF champion Warrington was named to be a possible dance partner of Wood in a possible British-only blockbuster, but he sustained an injury to his jaw during his brutal 7th-round defeat of veteran wrestler Kiko Martinez just two weeks after Wood defeated Conlan.
The next challenge for Warrington is likely to be a battle with his primary opponent Lara’s fellow countryman Luis Alberto Lopez.
Is this the Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara fight card being cancelled?
No. The event will continue on with the featherweight fight that will be fought between Maxi Hughes as well as Kid Galahad now topping the bill.
IBO Champion in lightweight Hughes fights fellow Yorkshireman Galahad who last saw having to forfeit his IBF featherweight belt in a fight with Kiko Martinez.
Another title fight is scheduled in the shape of Terri Harper stepping up two weights in order to fight Hannah Rankin, defending her unification super-welterweight title.
