After private photos of Leigh Nicol were published online, Leigh Nicol, a former Celtic star, bravely shared the horrendous abuse she has received on social media.
In an effort to highlight the need for change in online communication, Crystal Palace’s star took to Twitter to expose the degrading comments she gets.
After her iCloud was hacked, and photos of her shared on deplorable adult sites, the 25-year old took a year off football.
Today’s tweet was sent by Leigh from Bellshill, Lanarkshire. It included a number of screenshots and a warning about’sensitive content’.
She tweeted: “I keep them to myself, because these are not for kids to see on my profiles & I also don’t want children to be able follow me.”
“But, I have my own personal experiences over the past few days to show why we need to see some changes for a safer environment.”
The midfielder was told by a disgusting troll: “Hope your parents love you.” Your niece and nephew will be watching you, I’m sorry.
An Instagram message was also shared by the former Celtic academy star.
She wrote, “This used to be a source of extreme distress, but now it’s part my daily life and one that I don’t blink an eyelid to anymore.”
She said, “Enough is enough. Our black friends and all those who are subject to abuse because of how they look, act, live, or simply for breathing.
Many people responded to Leigh’s message of support.
Matt Himsworth, the owner of B5 – a consulting firm for sports and which Leigh is Associate Director – shared this tweet.
He stated that he and Leigh discussed in detail whether to post the reprehensible messages Leigh continues to receive.
“We reached an agreement on redaction and warning. There is fierce debate over how safe it is for women, sportspersons and public figures online. Every day is a battle.
