Jet Fighters operating on the East Midlands have been deployed to the Romanian Black Sea coast as part of a mission to secure the airspace of the country. There are four Typhoons are from RAF Coningsby were sent to the mission, and is assisted by 150 RAF personnel. It is confirmed.
Lincolnshire Live reports the personnel for the headquarters of the Expeditionary Air Wing (AEW). The mission, also known as Air Policing, is a defensive mission that is part of a continuous NATO mission that began in the year 1961, during the height of the Cold War.
It ensures the integrity and security of the integrity of NATO Alliance member’s airspaces, which are monitored by operational centres which determine the need for interception. The mission’s title is Operation Biloxi and it is the fourth time it has been conducted by the RAF has carried out the mission. The mission is in addition to the long-running ongoing missions conducted by NATO Allies across the Eastern Flank.
Minister responsible for Armed Forces James Heappey said: “The UK remains committed to NATO and European security in the wake of Russian aggression as well as the non-provoked invasion of Ukraine. Operation Biloxi is a long-standing NATO mission, and The Royal Air Force are playing an important role in deterrence and security throughout Europe.”
Vice-marshal of the Air Phil Robinson, Officer Commanding 11 Group, said: “The arrival of our personnel and our equipment in the region is a testament to the RAF’s commitment to and participation in the NATO Air Policing mission in Romania. During the mission we will work together with the Romanian along with other NATO partners to facilitate the operation to be completed as well as ensuring the safety of our allies, while fostering confidence and ensuring the deterrent.”
