According to probate office figures Jamal Edwards died penniless, although some claim his net worth was staggeringly high at PS335million.
He was only 31 years old when he died. Six months later, an inquest concluded that his death was due to cardiac arrhythmia. This was caused by cocaine and alcohol abuse.
According to The Mirror, there were conflicting reports that the star – who was given an MBE in 2015 for services to music industry – was worth between PS8 and PS335 millions.
Mail Online reports that he left an estate of only PS45,502.76, leaving him with nothing after settling his debts. Jamal, who in 2006 founded SBTV, an online music platform, made his will two years prior to his death. His entire estate was to be left to his family, including his mother and Loose Women actress Brenda Edwards. The trust fund he established was to distribute it.
However, the beneficiaries listed will not receive anything.
The star had just returned from playing in North London at 4 am, and before that he was drinking with Nick Hopper, his friend. The inquest revealed that he began to become erratic and paranoid after a while and started throwing objects around the room, before finally collapsing.
In a statement to the inquest, Mr Hopper stated that “when he arrived in, he seemed to be his usual self and it seemed that he had just been outside.” We began to talk, smoke some marijuana and drink. He said he was feeling a lot of pressure. There were times when he spoke, then he would stop talking.
Jamal began to become paranoid over time and claimed I had everything in my hands, when in fact he didn’t. He panicked whenever I moved. He became more agitated when I tried to calm him down. He began to grab things and throw them around the room. I tried to get him to open his door, but he was panicking and sweating.
According to Mr Hopper, he tried repeatedly to open a window but Mr Edwards refused and he finally fell unconscious at the bathroom door. He arrived at the hospital about 9.30 AM. His uncle said that he did CPR for approximately 10 minutes, until paramedics arrived. However, they were unable resuscitate him.
