East Kilbride Pirates’ women’s flag team has been selected to play in National women’s flag football finals in the league this weekend in Ravenscraig.
The game is back in Scotland for the second time on Saturday, which gives the Pirates the advantage of playing on their own turf, which they hope to work in their favor.
The Pirates women ended their regular season as third all-around in the UK out of 14 teams, which earned them to play in the finals. Their performance gave them a ‘bye’ for the first round and they’ll face the winner of London Amazons or Grangemouth Fillies which is the only Scottish team that is part of the conference – in the quarterfinals, with both teams fighting for the first tie before.
Last year , the team placed 3rd overall within the UK The the head coach Andrew Gibson is determined to surpass that mark in 2022.
He stated: “Getting to the finals this time was a massive achievement for our team this year, however we’d like to see more.
“We’ve experienced a tremendously strong season, participating in a few international tournaments and bringing home invaluable experience that’s been translated into our local game.
“We’ve been able to play the perennial finalist with ease in the circumstances we’ve been given and, hopefully, change Apple Cart on the Saturday. “
The club’s chair Amanda McDonald added: “The club is immensely satisfied with the achievements the women’s flag football team.
“The coaches and players have put in a lot of effort this season to make sure they’re in the best position to be able to compete in the finals. The finals taking place in Scotland once again is the perfect way to celebrate after a year of travel to play throughout England.”
