ALDI was named the cheapest Christmas turkey prices by The Sun’s annual price comparison.
The supermarket won the category for frozen birds in Christmas turkey prices, but it was close followed by Morrisons (who both charge 1p more) and Tesco.
Tesco, the UK’s largest grocer, won the cheapest category for fresh food with its PS10 bird.
Morrisons was the top-ranked premium turkey, with its luxurious PS27 The Best range turkey.
The Sun ran the numbers to determine the best price for Christmas 2019.
We compared turkeys from eight retailers to find the best price.
Shopping around is always a good idea, as prices can change and shops may offer discounts in the lead-up to the big event.
A local or independent butcher might be able to offer cheaper turkeys. They are likely to have been raised with better standards of animal welfare and will often be more readily available.
We did our best to find the cheapest bird and also took into consideration the cost per kilogram.
We compared birds that served approximately the same number of people. We mainly focused on whole turkeys and not crowns.
Prices in each table also reflect the lowest weight.
Lidl is the only supermarket that didn’t provide turkey prices and doesn’t yet have any turkeys on its website.
Where can I buy the cheapest bird in my area?
Cheapest frozen turkey – PS8.99 at Aldi (PS2.64/kg)
Aldi, just like in our 2018 price comparison has been the cheapest frozen turkey supplier – and the price has remained constant.
The small British turkey sold by the supermarket is priced at PS2.64 per kg and can be used for seven people. A pack costs PS8.99.
Morrisons and Tesco are close behind, with frozen chickens only 1p cheaper at PS9 total.
Morrisons is the best option if you count per kilogram. Tesco is at PS2.82 per kg.
Also, the Aldi turkey is a huge PS13.76 less than the Waitrose deal. This deal will cost you PS22.75.
For the same price, you could purchase another whole bird.
Frozen birds can be purchased now, even though most fresh turkeys will not go on sale until after Christmas.
M&S did not provide us with the cheapest frozen turkey.
Freshest turkey at the lowest price – PS11.85 (PS3.95 per kilogram)
In 2018, Morrisons was the cheapest, but this year Tesco is the winner.
The UK’s largest supermarket sells the freshest whole turkey at a low price. It costs just PS4 per kilogram and can be served to four to ten people.
The Tesco bird is 2.5 kg in size and costs PS10.
Sainsbury’s is the next-cheapest in terms of total price. They sell a 2kg turkey for PS11, which can be used to feed up to six people.
It was broken down by weight and Aldi won another win with fresh turkey at PS3.95 per kg.
The minimum price for fresh turkeys sold by budget retailers is 3kg.
M&S is the supermarket that sells the most expensive fresh birds.
A shopper who chooses this luxury supermarket option for a 5.4kg bird will pay PS35, which is more than Tesco.
Asda lists fresh turkeys as having a “typical size” at 3.5kg. However, the retailer could not tell us the smallest size when we asked.
Because Iceland isn’t selling fresh birds this year, and Morrisons doesn’t want to share their fresh turkey prices with us, it isn’t included in this category.
You won’t have the chance to order these birds until December 19, if you are already planning your Christmas dinner.
However, some of these items are available for pre-order.
Luxury turkey at the lowest price – PS27 from Morrisons (PS6.75/kg)
Every supermarket has its own luxury brand, and Morrisons’ The Best turkey range was the winner.
The whole turkey, which is free-range and comes in a bronze color, costs only PS27 per 4kg bird. It can be served to seven to eight people.
However, the price per kilogram is PS6.75, which isn’t necessarily the most affordable option.
Tesco’s Finest British Free Range Whole Turkey was the best-priced turkey in terms per kilogram at PS5.97
The starting weight of this turkey is 4.75kg, which is slightly more than the Morrisons option. This means that the price is PS28.36.
Waitrose was the most expensive, with its No.1 dry range bronzed feathered turkey at PS56 per kilogram.
Iceland had only a turkey crown in the Luxury range, so our focus is on whole birds.
What is the difference between a turkey whole bird and a turkey crown?
The turkey crown is the entire bird without the dark meat – the legs or the wings – and you are left with white meat and no giblets.
They are usually a few pounds less than whole birds and they are also easier to prepare.
Asda’s turkey crown is the cheapest at PS5.50 per kg, but it costs PS6.25 per kilogram from Tesco or PS6.89 for a kilogram from Aldi.
Morrisons turkey crown price is PS7 per kilo, as opposed to PS7.50 at Sainsbury’s which is the same price like Iceland.
Waitrose has the lowest turkey crown price per kg. It’s PS10.
What are some turkey alternatives?
There are many other Christmas traditions than the traditional turkey dinner.
Aldi sells a delicious camembert nut roast at PS2.99 for cheese lovers, while Sainsbury’s sells a similar cheese nuts roast at PS2.
