What. A. Rush. Call the Midwife season 12 put viewers in a state of disarray following the crash of a train that left the fates of beloved characters on the line. Dr. Turner (aka Stephen McGann’s Dr. Turner) along with the Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) were both injured and confined, their circumstances becoming more dangerous. A head injury or a heart attack, respectively, put their life in danger.
If that weren’t enough it was enough, the warning of doom was going through viewers their minds, like a bomb preparing to explode and teasing the worst-case result.
We are grateful that the two of them were able to escape without injury however, the accident claimed the life of one driver the wife of the driver was undergoing the process of giving birth.
While this was happening, Nonnatus House was forced to face all the turmoil without Sister Julienne who was at the helm of their vessel, and the typically cheerful disposition nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George) who was sacked in the fifth episode.
The nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) was quick to help and returned from her journey to help the situation (and soothe viewers’ anxieties) by her calm control of the crisis.
It was quite a bit. The best way to get back on track by sipping a cup of tea and a glass of biccie as we discuss what’s to come for Call The Midwife’s future.
Call the Midwife season 12 release date: When’s it on?
The raven may have foretold bad tidings ahead but there’s only good news where renewals are concerned. Not only has the show been re-commissioned by the BBC for a 12th season in 2023, it has also been given the green light for season 13, which is to follow in 2024 (as reported by Radio Times).
Creator, writer and executive producer Heidi Thomas spoke of the show’s success saying:
“It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call the Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over. We are thrilled to be going on for a few more years!
“Like Nonnatus House itself, we have a proud past but an even more exciting future – full of old favourites, fresh faces, higher hemlines, new ideas. The stories we tell are like babies – they never stop coming, we love them all, and we vow to do our best by every single one.”
Season 12 will be made up of eight hour-long episodes along with a feature-length Christmas Special.
2023 is admittedly a long time to wait but luckily fans will be able to indulge much sooner than that as season 11 will also have a Christmas Special.
Call the Midwife season 12 cast: Who will be coming back?
Despite her most recent brush with death, we can expect that Agutter’s Sister Julienne will make a return for season 12.
She is likely to be joined by her fellow Sisters and nurses Sister Hilda (Fenella Woolgar) Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt), nurse Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack), Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) and Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen). Leonie Elliott’s Nurse Lucille Robinson and her onscreen husband Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte) are also likely to make a comeback.
Of our regulars that just leaves the vivacious nurse Trixie Franklin, whose rough patch led to a mid-season exit. Helen George’s character left to take care of a sick aunt in Italy. But it’s all a ruse: the real-life Trixie is in fact having her own baby.
Discussing her pregnancy, George said:
“I was pregnant in the series, so you just kind of see me walk across the screen sometimes with odd fashions, or I’d sit down a lot, or I’m wearing lots of capes.
“It wasn’t a correct storyline to choose for the character, as well. It wasn’t right for Trixie to be pregnant. So we just did our best to cover it up.”
